Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR)

The Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) is a 7,000 acre private reserve, owned by the Ausable Club. Between May 1 and October 31 each year, the AMR requires a reservation to park and access the area through the AMR entrance trailhead (just past the entrance of Ausable Club Road). Accessing the AMR through trailheads that begin outside of the area does not require a reservation. The AMR entrance is a popular start for hiking into Indian Head.

Carpark Capacity

Oct 2024

70 reservations are available per day and reservation is free. Reservation is by vehicle so the park has a daily 70 vehicle capacity. Each reservation accommodates up to 8 people.

Parking is just past the entrance of Ausable Club Road, after turning off Route 73 (marked as Indian Head Trailhead or St.Huberts Parking area on Google Maps). Parking is not permitted past this parking lot. Walking into this AMR lot itself, without a car still requires a reservation.

Fees

Oct 2024

There is no fee. Reservations need to be made here, after signing up/signing in (reservations are required between May 1 and October 31)

  • Reservations can be made 14 days in advance of the date of reservation (noon each day as the opening, for the 14th day out) and up to 12hrs before. Reservations are booked out well in advance and weekends are particularly competitive. There are many reports of the reservation system crashing because of demand.
  • If there is a cancellation, the reservation will be available through the above site. The below Facebook group is often used by both people cancelling reservations and people looking for reservations - often somebody will post to this group, letting others know they will soon be cancelling and that the reservation will be available again: https://www.facebook.com/groups/414744654731700

Others can be added to a reservation (up to 8 people per reservation) but they’ll need to arrive in the same vehicle as the reserver. They can be added to a reservation inside the AMR booking portal. Reservations can also be transferred to another person by going into the portal and editing the reservation details (the new designated ‘reserver’ will receive an email from the AMR shortly after the reservation has been transferred to them.

Hikers can access the trails in the AMR through other trail heads without AMR parking reservation - popular nearby choices are Rooster Comb, the Garden and Snow Mountain trail heads parking.

Another way to access the AMR entrance without reservation is through arriving to the Keen Valley via Greyhound or Trailways bus lines and showing the bus ticket to the parking attendant (as a hack, you don’t need to actually ride and can just buy the ticket and make your way to the entrance on foot). Taking the bus from Lake Placid to Keene Valley is common for this (https://trailways.com/schedules/bus-from-lake-placid-ny-to-keene-valley-ny/).

If you enter the AMR within 24hrs of arrival to the area, on either of these bus lines, this will negate the need for an AMR reservation.
