How are hiking times estimated?

Hiking times can be estimated using Naismith's Rule, which estimates hiking times based on distance and elevation gain. It suggests:

  • 1 hour for every 3 miles of horizontal distance.

  • Add 1 hour for every 2000 feet of ascent.

Keep in mind that this is a rough estimate, which assumes an average hiker on normal terrain. It doesn’t account for factors like descent, terrain difficulty, or individual fitness levels.
